Sailing permits in Croatia

A permit is required for sailing in Croatia. A boating license for the sea (SBF See) or an equivalent international sailing license is usually required. The lessor may impose additional requirements, such as proof of appropriate sailing knowledge and experience.

Some charterers also accept a coastal license or an inland navigation license (SBF Binnen) as equivalent licenses for charter boats in Croatia.

If you are sailing on a yacht equipped with a VHF radio, at least one person on board must have a VHF certificate. As almost all charter yachts in Croatia are equipped with VHF, it is important to be aware of this.

Winds in Croatia

In general, the wind blows at a speed of 10 to 20 knots in the spring and summer months. In the fall and winter, the wind blows at a speed of 10 to 28 knots. However, there are three prevailing winds that you should be aware of. These are Bura, Siroko and Maestral.

Bura

Bura is a strong north-easterly wind that blows in Croatia from north to north-east. This dry and cold wind brings good weather from the mainland to the Adriatic. It is one of the strongest winds in Europe, but is known for its predictability. Therefore, make sure that you stay in a harbor or a sheltered bay and not on the water during Bora, as the wind can reach gale force and usually only lasts 2 to 4 days. Note: Bora occurs less frequently in summer and most frequently in winter.

Wide

It is a broad, warm and humid wind that can blow at any time of year. This wind blows from east to south across the Adriatic. This leads to rough seas and large, rainy clouds. The wind is strongest when it comes from the south. It blows at an average speed of 16 to 20 knots.

Mistral

And finally, maestral. This wind is created by a current of air that rises from warmer land and is drawn towards the sea. The result is a circulation between land and sea. The maestral can be recognized by the thick white clouds. The wind increases in the morning and is at its strongest around 14:00 (16 to 20 knots). The wind dies down again in the evening.
